I have long thought that this image - of immigrants' letters to families home, hung from ceiling in Seattle's Wing Luke Asian Museum - is a beautiful way to demonstrate how (a) at that time, written correspondence home was perhaps the only way to maintain relations, (b) the simple act of writing a letter can have a transformational impact on relationships, and here in an aesthetic way, and (c) that the collection of all of these words on documents represents a community with a common thread: making it in the new world. This image is from Oct. 2008 Metropolis magazine.
